Rock and Roll Voodoo was created in 1994 at San
Francisco’s Warfeild Theater at a private Halloween party for the
Rolling Stones during their Voodoo Lounge Tour. The Rolling Stones and
their guests helped to create this piece of art by adding their touches
of paint as well as their signatures to the canvas. Other signatures and
comments date the painting, such as “Free The Mitchell One”, referring
to the bizarre murder of Artie Mitchell at the hands of his brother
James, former owners of the renowned O’Farrell Theater, San Francisco’s
garden of sex and sin.
This FingerSmear remained in storage for over 20
years. A few years ago I pulled this piece of history out of the tube to
complete a truly one of a kind piece of art that has spanned the
decades of my career. Rock and Roll Voodoo was among the first dozen
FingerSmears™ I created in San Francisco. Since that time, I've had
over 100,000 people stick their fingers in paint to be part of my
collaborative FingerSmears™ including Bruce Springsteen, Harrison Ford,
and Carol Burnett. FingerSmears™ have been commissioned to commemorate
the US Open, The 50th Anniversary of the United Nations, All Star
Baseball Games, and The National Walk for Epilepsy on the Mall in DC.
I'm continually humbled and delighted by these
experiences, and I wish more color, more joy, and more collaboration -
in a world that too often forgets the power of it.
