A Beginner's Guide to Krautrock

My son got me a book on Krautrock a few years ago which I inevitably became obsessed with.

Whether it be through space-rock, variously styled synth-rattling mustard cakes, or Deutsch jumbled acid rock, Krautrock is a genre well worth exploring. "Hero" is a well-known contribution from the group Neu! which looks ahead to punk--especially with its intentional mutilation of English pronunciation.

"Hallogallo" is another Neu! composition that, like some Kraftwerk pieces, puts you in a hypnotic and productive groove.

Faust is a Krautrock band with varying styles.  During their heyday, they would sometimes be heavily experimental while alternatively producing very accomplished progressive rock.

Similarly, two of the most well-known Krautrock bands, Can and Amon Duul ll, produced music with a conventional appeal, but could as well produce things like Ege Bamyasi and Yeti, respectively.

Check out what Can was capable of live here and here. Great stuff. If you grew up watching World War II, Amon Duul’s live version of "Deutsch Nepal" can scare the hell out of you.

Anyone desiring to get deeper into the subject can view the documentary: Krautrock The Rebirth of Germany. For the serious rock history buff, it’s worth the running length.
