The Beach Boys - Surf's Up | Reprise Records 1971

As one of a long list of undeservedly ignored Beach Boys albums that followed the groundbreaking Pet Sounds, Surf's Up is an album that includes a lot of the quirky psychedelic effects that showed up on Smiley Smile, and with a 1971 release it may have been a bit out of step with some of that year’s music. Here’s hoping that last year’s film “Love and Mercy” will inspire a bit more of a great American band’s catalog.

Along with the title track, Feel Flows is pure Beach Boys and ranks with their best. Add in Bruce
Johnston’s delightfully nostalgic Disney Girls (1957) and the good-natured Take a Load Off Your Feet and you’ve got an album very much worth owning.
